1926 Armstrong Siddeley 18HP Short MKII Peel Bodied Tourer

Own a piece of Queensland’s automotive history!

Introduced in 1921, the 18hp was a derivative of Armstrong Siddeley’s first offering, the 30hp which had debuted about 2 years earlier. Powered by a smaller 2318cc OHV inline 6 cylinder engine, the new model sat on a shorter 10ft wheel base but utilized the same track and suspension layout as the bigger car.

By Autumn of 1925 the model was updated with a larger 2872cc engine and new chassis available in either short or long wheelbase which differed in wheelbase length and final drive ratio.

The model was equipped with the unusual V shaped radiator, 3 speed non-synchro gearbox, front/rear cable drum brakes and was capable of 60mph.

Unusually, the due to the shape of the V shaped radiator – the radiator fan that would normally sit behind the radiator was incorporated into the flywheel of the engine – coupled with the engine bay being completely enclosed – the whole system worked very effectively – though having air pushed through the clutch/brake/accelerator peddles is an unusual side effect!

Chassis number AS 41094  is a very rare find indeed being imported to Australia as an engine and chassis only and being fitted with a Peel body – only 1 of 2 Armstrong Siddeley’s ever bodied by the Peel Body Works of Brisbane.

Bodied as an open tourer in aluminium over timber frame, the Armstrong Sidelley was first delivered in 1926 to Mr H Wright of Kurrawonga station, in Fletcher QLD presented in Grey/Blue & Black Guards exterior with brown leather seat and brown carpeting.

In the late 1920’s the Armstrong was sold to a R Pearce who used the car up to around 1964 where it was off the road and stored until it’s new owner in 1985 started a full restoration, completed and finally back on the road in 1993. During this time, the interior was changed to red leather upholstery with red carpeting complimenting the exterior paint work.

The Armstrong went through a few owners until being purchased by Hinkler House in the 4th quarter of 2014 to be used as a non-destroy template for chassis AS 40760 otherwise known as H.J.A (Bert) Hinkler – rumour has it that AS 41094’s body and interior was going to be pulled apart and used for the Bert Hinkler project however it remained in such good original condition, that the club couldn’t bare to destroy it.

Since it’s restoration, the Armstrong has been used for club drives, car shows and general Sunday driving – the paint work has remained in good condition showing a little patina while the interior presents as almost new making a very comfortable place drive.

Under the bonnet remains the original 2872cc inline 6 mated to the 3 speed crash box. Only modifications during this time have been an electric fuel pump (with kill switch in cab) and rear mono tube shock absorbers for handling.

The Armstrong retains its original logbooks, historical history file and workshop manuals. The Q79191 number plate also comes with the vehicle – which was it’s first registration when new.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire unique part of Queensland’s automotive history.

Vehicle is sold unregistered with RWC (if sold in QLD)
