1927 Amilcar Type G Special
 
Founded in July 1921 by Joseph Lamy and Emile Akar – the first Amilcar was a small two-seater cyclecar called the Type CC. With a 903cc 4-cylinder engine making about 18b.h.p and weighing less than 350kg - It was the basis for all Amilcar’s to follow.
 
Amilcar produced many variants including the CC, C4, CS, CGS, CGS3 (small seat in the tail) and the CGSS (the “S” standing for Surbaissé - lowered chassis). Touring cars were also produced such as the type G, M, L and E with some of these touring cars seeing success in competition in international rallies including a win at the 1927 Mote Carlo Rally (supercharged Model G).
 
The most famous model in the Amilcar lineup was the CGS (Grand Sport) and CGSS (Grand Sport Surbaissé) having been the top sporty models on offer. These vehicle’s saw a lot of use in competition and to some extent, were seen as the ‘poor mans Bugatti’ – being that they offered thrilling, lightweight performance at a fraction of the cost.
 
In 1925 Amilcar introduced the Type G, powered by a 1,100cc version of their four-cylinder engine (good for 27bhp), with a 4-speed transmission and suspension via semi-elliptic leaf springs with shock absorbers on both axles. Top speed was said to be in the region of 100km/h depending on the type of bodywork, which was offered in saloon, coupé and convertible variants. Having had limited market success, production ceased in 1927.
 
Vehicle History
Inspired by the CGS and CGSS sports/racing cars - the current owner and builder brought this Amilcar back to life from a “pile of parts” – this included the chassis, engine, transmission, drive line, suspension, radiator cowl, wheels and ancillary parts expect for the body which was long gone.
The decision was made early on to hand form the body out of aluminium into a boat tail styled racer with 1 door, tight cockpit and spare mounted on the driver’s side.  
The restoration spanned over 4 years, finally completed in 2021 where it was presented at the Mac-Leans Bridge Classic Car show for the first time.
Since the restoration, the Amilcar has seen very little use over the last 5 years and now due to age – the owner has decided to sell his beloved Amilcar.
The Amilcar drives beautifully with a lot of low-down pep, good exhaust note and well setup chassis for road use.
 
This Amilcar would make a great addition to any collection or as a statement piece (it’s just that good to look at!).
