The RM series of Riley’s were launched in the aftermath of WW2 though much of the styling and mechanicals were evidently of pre-war design having been envisioned at the time by Victor Riley and Harry Rush to build a high performance, large engined (for UK) drivers’ car. Apparently, the design was undertaken in some secrecy from the rest of the Board.
In 1945, the Riley RMA was launched with a 1.5 litre engine and a few months later, it’s big brother the RMB came to fruition.
The RMB was essentially a stretched RMA with Riley’s ‘Big Four’ 2.5 litre long stroke, 2 SU carburettor engine making about 90hp. This was later updated to around 100hp in 1948 following some minor revisions giving the Riley a top speed close to 100mph. All models were equipped with a 4 speed transmission with synchro on 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears.
The RM series of Riley followed the traditional English practice of body on chassis with the body’s frame being made from Ash overlaid with a steel skin.
The new RM series of vehicles were received to much acclaim by the motoring press - ‘A fine combination of highly accurate steering with unusually comfortable suspension – a car for the discriminating’. The RM’s series included rack and pinion steering with independent front suspension sprung on torsion bars with the rear sporting longleaf semi-elliptic springs.
Vehicle History:
This RMB presents in nice having been restored about 8 years ago by a ‘Mr Bill Bunt’ from Townsville and has been subsequently used on many long distance rallies even as far as Tasmania without any significant issues. The car has been a staple member of the Riley Car Club of QLD attending many outings.
Showing a little bit of patina on the paintwork, the body shows no signs of corrosion with the bight work in gleaming condition. The tires have been changed to a slight taller size giving the RMB an even smoother ride and ease of replacement when the time comes.
Moving to the inside, the interior features the classic wood panelling, with beige leatherette seating with red carpet contrasting nicely with the exterior, all in good condition.
Under the bonnet, the original 2.5 ‘Big For’ fires to life easily with the pleasant burble – all maintenance has been carried out by the current owner.
