Synonymous with starting the age of the ‘pony’ car, Ford’s vice president and general manager Lee Lacocca envisioned a sporty youth-market car based on the existing compact Ford Falcon base. The Mustang was developed in record time on a shoe-string budget and was presented to the public at the World’s Fair on the 17th of April 1964 to much amazement and acclaim. Though Ford had planned 100,000 sales in the first year, over 22,000 orders had been placed on the first day! Ford had unknowingly started the Pony car craze.

The Mustang was initially introduced as a coupe and convertible with either a 170ci straight six, 260ci 2v, V8 and 289ci 4v, V8 and a solid lifter 271hp 289ci 4-barrel staring in June 1964. For the 1965 model year the fastback was introduced along with the enlarged 200ci straight six base engine and 289ci 2v, V8 replacing the 260ci V8 engine. The Mustang also came with a myriad of optional extras furthering its appeal to a broad marketplace from entry level grocery getters to all out-performance monsters.

Vehicle History

This ‘C Code’ Mustang was brought into Australia in late 1987 and in 1995 was repainted in its original Caspian Blue while the interior was refreshed in the original Parchment Vinyl with blue carpeting.

In 2002 the Mustang was converted to Right Hand Drive by Williams Automotive Engineers (VIC) as a mirror conversion (not the cheaper cross shaft conversion!). This included a steering rack from a XR falcon, brake booster relocated to the RHS and other small modifications to suit the mirror conversion. Later in 2005 the Mustang gained another engineers report for NSW registration having passed without any modification.

Since then, the Mustang has been well cared for by its subsequent owners and presents in very good shape being an older restoration. It is a pleasure to drive with the power top down and a throaty burble under acceleration.
