One of the ultimate luxury grand tourers of the 1990’s - the BMW 8 series was a technological powerhouse that showed many advancements in computerised car design and inbuilt electronic advancements that modern cars take for granted.

Being the replacement for the aging 6 series coupe, the 8 series saw a step up in the marketplace with a substantial price increase to match and at the development cost of 1.5 billion Deutsche Mark (about $9 billion USD 2019) it is easy to see why in comparison to it’s other model line up at the time. BMW’s new coupe was the first ever completely CAD (computer aided design) designed vehicle and was the first vehicle to offer a V12 engine mated to a 6 speed manual transmission on a road car – also one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic fly-by-wire throttle. It was also one of the first BMW’s to use a multilink rear axle that gave the 8 series excellent handling despite its extra weight.

The 8 series typically feels like a heavy grand tourer however has the precise handling that one would expect from a BMW. With the combination of the very stylish pillarless coupe arrangement, driving along the road with the windows down and sunroof open is almost a right of passage of any 8 owner and gives the feel of almost driving a convertible with the security of a hard top.

8’s initially came out with the M70 V12 engine mated to a 4 speed Auto that later was enlarged and modified for greater power however due to increasing demand of a more fuel efficient and economical powerplant, also came out with the M60 and later M62 V8 engines of 4L and 4.4L capacity respectively. The V8 options are usually considered by most 8 series owners to be the better handling of the two options due to less weight over the front axle. They also have a near identical acceleration due to the 5 and 6 speed Automatic gearboxes.

This 840ci is in excellent condition and has been in the hands of a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable owner for the past 6 years.
